Who invented in 1923 a three-way automatic stop sign, which was the forerunner of the modern traffic light?
Garrett Morgan (1875-1963), American inventor, whose two most important inventions were the three-way automatic traffic stop light and the gas mask (originally called a safety hood). He was born in Paris, Kentucky. Morgan started working at age 14 after 6 years of schooling. His interest in mechanics was sparked by a job as a sewing-machine adjustor for a clothing manufacturer.
