contemporary Espresso what's the difference between maple, cherry, and quarter sawn oak if all are stained the same color?
I want to remodel my kitchen with espresso slab cabinets (a contemporary cabinet look with no framing details on the doors). I'm stuck on whether I should go maple, cherry, or something else like quarter sawn oak.
-Since espresso is such a dark color, what are the differences in all the different wood types? -Will choosing a specific wood change the color of the doors? -How much wood veins will show in each type of wood if the stain color is so dark? -what else characteristics would be different in each wood type? -recommendation on a certain wood?

There is some real poor advice so far. Here is the deal. As far as cost, oak is the cheapest, maple is about 15% more then oak and cherry is about 40% more then oak. Quartersawn oak is very very hard to find and if you do you will have to mortgage your home to buy it. Quartersawn is widely used on most all furniture way back in the day. Today what we call antiques is almost all quartersawn.
What you may be thinking about is color. Please separate color from wood species. Cherry has a dark red tinge in its natural state and is warm and beautiful with almost any stain. Cherry is a soft wood so may not be a good choice if there are destructive dogs or kids around. Oak is very hard and durable and takes most any stain color nicely. Oak is grainy and some people do not like it. It is common and most cost effective. Maple is the hardest wood you can buy next to walnut. Maple will be clear whitish yellowish in its natural state.
If I took provincial stain and applied it to every wood species I would get a different color. Since cherry is so soft it obviously will absorb more stain and come out very dark. Maple is very hard so will absorb very little and remain light. Oak is a good example of this since the hard grains do not absorb and the soft grains do. You can see quite clearly on oak what I mean.
Expresso is very very dark which means you will hide the grain of the wood. Oak is most grainy and then cherry, then maple. Why pay maple price if you are going to put a stain on it so dark it hides the grain?
If you are on a budget then stick with oak. Dark colors are the new craze despite a small kitchen but I have not yet jumped in to this new fad quite yet.

I'll give 25 points to the person who can find me a new comforter...?
My room is a light tan, and the wood furniture finish is dark...espresso-ish. The trim around the room is white, and the doors are white. The reason I'm asking this is because I had the one I wanted picked out....but now it's out of stock.
It doesn't matter if it's a comforter, duvet, "bedspread," down comforter, etc. (however, I'm not into quilts.) I also am looking for something not toooo old-fashioned...more of a contemporary look. Price range doesn't really matter. ok i meant 10. sorry.
