I am interested in persuing an education in visual art as a college student. I have absolutely no background, and was wondering, what is happening right now? What mediums are common, for what purpose, politically driven or not, big names etc etc. Is it linked to movements in contemporary theory, criticism, literature, and if so, how? Any information would be very greatly appreciated!!!! Anything really about art (actually of any kind) today.
If you like to be in this profession try not, just be, dont look for movements right now theyre so confused most of them isnt worth. If you are looking for names try Gabriel Orozco, Demian Hirst, Lucian Freud, Francesco Clemente. But you shoul really look in the past, because today artist are not really doing anything. You should think for yourself and look the world, nature will be providing you with what you need

Best books for learning contemporary graphic design and typography?
I'm a new motion graphics artist with a degree in computer animation. However my degree did not include graphic design classes, and I've been told I need to educate myself in this area. I'm looking for a good book that a neophyte can pick up and understand. I'd love if it especially commented on the modern trends in graphic design, but a plain old "learn the basics" recommendation would help.
I would suggest you get adobe illustrator and photoshop and just start playing.. I did great in graphics before i went into fine art... I find that the best way to learn is to look at ads, practice.. teach yourself. You can easily look up.. say... print's best logos, print's best ads, print's best menus etc. on the computer... there are "the best menu" etc. Everything you want in print is on the computer.
